Be careful if you have the fireplace going and little kids are around. Even if the doors are shut, they can get pretty hot. We had that happen to our 4 year old daughter. Will probably wait a few years before we us ours again.
I think I will spring for a fireplace screen this year, if I can find one on sale. I have been trying to find one for a while since the little screen I have over the fireplace isn't working very well.
I live in the middle of the corn belt and the corn burners work well. It's a lot less hassle than chopping wood and it seems to burn longer than when we had a regular wood burning stove. Of course, that could just be my imagination.
I also like the chimineas as I live in a small duplex with and even smaller patio. The chiminea is easy to light and stays warm for quite a while. Plus I have one that has a design like a sun that is really cool.
I have been using an insert in my fireplace for about 3 years. It really made a difference. I sprung for a a bit more expensive type than I normally would have got on the advice of a friend. My has the radiant heat rack with blowers. It makes a huge difference in the heating bill.
Fireplaces are just more trouble than they are worth. I hate having to haul would in the fall and I don't like dragging it through the house and then having to clean up that mess and then the ash after the logs have burned.
I have a chiminea and it is great in both the summertime and the winter. My friends and I like to come over and grill some steaks. It works pretty well if you dont' have a crowd. It also really breaks the chill on those Autumn evenings.
